Personal Histories - “Coming Out Story” by Alison Bechdel (OC 81)

Alison Bechdel (OC 81) is the author of the wildly popular comic strip Dykes To Watch Out For and the critically acclaimed graphic memoir Fun Home: A Family Tragicomic (Houghton Mifflin, 2006).

Dykes To Watch Out For is syndicated in dozens of newspapers and translated into several languages. Utne magazine calls it “one of the greatest hits of the twentieth century.” Bechdel has also done exclusive work for a number of newspapers, websites, comic books, and ‘zines.

Her “Coming Out Story,” which takes place at Oberlin College, was originally published in Gay Comics (Early Summer 1993, #19). It is reproduced here with the permission of the author.
